The Childish Gambino concert I attended this past weekend was the worst concert experience I’ve had in my life. It was no fault of his own. His set was INCREDIBLE. The production value of his stage set was among the best I had EVER seen. His energy was amazing. The problem for me lies in the fan base. A crowd of douchebags with no sense of personal space and concert etiquette saw Sam and I having to put our hands on more than one concert goer. We wouldn’t call it quite a “fight” but we did physically move people with forceful shoves and intentional elbows/punches. Ok… now that I’m retelling it, maybe it was a fight. This isn’t about the fight so the details of how it started aren’t important, but let’s say the crowd surfer that fell on Sam was the final straw… I don’t even want to get into waiting in line for 1.5 hours to get to the door to find out I couldn’t bring my camera in, and then having to walk it back to the car while half the line got into the standing room only venue before us afterwards.
However the night wasn’t a complete waste. After the show, we hung out around the venue in an attempt to not head home yet, and stumbled upon a crowd of people waiting near the tour bus. We waited. And waited. And waited. Finally he emerged from the venue greeted by a hoard of screaming fans behind police tape. Clearly humbled by the situation he came over and talked to EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. and signed as many autographs as they wanted. He’s a really humble and genuine guy.
